Abstract;By investing life-style of fishermen in relation to smoking habits and drinking habits. Key word: fishermen, seafarers, smoking habits, drinking habits, exercise habits OBJECTIVE: This investigation of seamen in passenger ship discovered regular drinking habits. It was found that about 60% of seamen in passenger ship have regular drinking tendencies and 56.8% smoke. When categorized by age, it was found that Rating members under age 44 smoke more heavily than other age groups. It was also found that males had a higher tendency to be smokers. Following last year's research ('04), this year ('05) a study of fishermen was conducted via questionnaire to investigate working conditions by ship-type in an effort to prevent diseases among fishermen. METHODS: It was thought that there might be a strong relationship between seafaring life-style and environment and occurrence of diseases. With the help of The All Japan Seamen's Union, research was conducted via questionnaire yielding 179 responses. RESUL: Of the 179 collected questionnaires, 1 there are a seamen in foreign-trade vessel, 7 seamen in domestic-trade vessel, 166 fishermen and 5 were categorized as "other". Research was conducted by analyzing only fishermen as the target group. Chart 1 shows age distribution. The average age was 48.3. 40% of fishermen surveyed were in their 50's and just under 20% were in their 40's. Other age groups each represented about 10% of the entire group, however there was 1 participant in his 70's. Chart 2 shows distribution according to working position. The study showed that 100 of the fishermen surveyed were officers with 30% of them as Radio officers and around 20% as Captains, Deck officeer and Engineer. Chart 3 shows the average number of days at sea. The overall average was 72.9 days with more than 80% of the fishermen surveyed having operated within the past 2 months.... (author abst.)
