| Abstract; Objective: Constipation is frequently observed in patients with Parkinson disease due to autonomic dysfunction. In this study, the effects of polycarbopbhil calcium were evaluated in Parkinson disease patients with constipation. Patients and Methods: Polycarbophil calcium was administered at a range of 1.5-3.0g/day for 14 days to seven patients with Parkinson disease having constipation, and changes in gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated using a questionnaire (a bowel movement diary). Results: During the administration, softened stool form, increased stool frequency, and decreased feelings of residual feces were observed. In one case, diarrhea had been observed due to overuse of a laxative before polycarbophil calcium administration, but improvement of diarrhea was observed during this administration. No aggravation of Parkinson disease by this administration was observed. Conclusions: Polycarbophil calcium was considered useful for improvement of constipation in patients with Parkinson disease. In addition, the effectiveness of this medicine in other patients with neurological disorders having constipation should be examined. (author abst.) |
