Abstract;Leiomyosarcoma with osteoclast-like giant cells (LOGC) is a very rare neoplasm of the uterus. We report here a case of a 44-year-old female with LOGC. Cytological examination revealed two types of multinucleated giant cells (MGC) in atypical spindle-shaped mononuclear cells with necrotic background; a type was atypical MGC showing hyperchromatic, irregular-shaped, and large nuclei, and another type was osteoclast-like giant cells (OGC) showing several blunt round-shaped nuclei. Immunohistochemically, atypical MGC were positive for both alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) and desmin as well as atypical mononuclear cells, while, OGC were positive for CD68 but neither SMA nor desmin. These results suggest that OGC are derived from histiocytic lineage and reactive components in leomyosarcoma. Further case reports are definitively required to determine the pathological and prognostic significances of LOGC as compared with typical leiomyosarcoma of the uterus. (author abst.)
