Abstract; The authors consider that it is important to promote downsizing using a two-stroke engine in order to further improve vehicle fuel economy. In view of that, the potential improvement in fuel economy of the Pneumatic Direct Injection-AR Engine, which the authors have introduced, over the four-stroke engine was analyzed. For verification on an actual vehicle, a prototype 250cm'3' PDI-AR engine was installed on a large scooter which originally had a 385cm'3' four-stroke engine, and fuel economy was tested. The results adequately prove the validity of our presumptions, indicating an approximately 70% improvement in fuel economy in the ECE40 mode. (author abst.)
