Abstract;A systematic study on the polymorphs of the natural cuprates Cu2Cl(OH)3, atacamite and botallackite, is carried out using magnetic susceptibility and muon spin relaxation (.MU.SR) measurements. Atacamite and botallackite are found to undergo antiferromagnetic transition at TN=9.0K and TN=7.2K, respectively. Botallackite shows a sharp transition while atacamite is suggested to have a wide distribution in the internal (electron spin) field. The contrasting magnetic properties in the polymorphs are consistently explained by an inspection into the coordination, in special the bond angles of Cu-O-Cu, along which the super-exchange magnetic coupling occurs, in the two polymorphs. A comparison with other copper oxides reveals that the strength of the super-exchange coupling in the copper oxides can be drawn in a simple relation with the Cu-O-Cu bond angle. (author abst.)
