Abstract; In expectation to destroy venomous snakes (Trimeresurus flavoviridis) and harmful rats, the small Asian mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) was introduced to Okinawa Island (1200km2) in 1910 and Amami-Oshima Island (710km2) in 1979. Both islands of the Ryukyus harbor many endemic and endangered species that the mongoose preys on. It is considered that the mongoose is causing population reduction and extinction of such species as occurred on the islands of other parts of the world. The control program was launched on both islands, and has significantly reduced population size and density of the mongoose. However, the eradication is difficult due to technical and budget limitations. (author abst.)
