Abstract; To compare the AR40, a new acrylic intraocular lens (IOL), with the MA60BM lens, we performed phacoemulsification and aspiration with IOL insertion in patients with the same grade cataract in both eyes, inserting the AR40 in one eye and the MA60BM in the other. We compared the two groups in terms of postoperative refraction, anterior chamber inflammation, IOL decentration and tilting, and posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Postoperative refraction tended more toward myopia than toward the predicted refraction in the AR40 group. It was felt that another IOL power calculation and personal A constant were needed. There was not significant difference in anterior chamber inflammation, decentration or tilting between the two groups (p>0.05). PCO in the MA60BM group was significantly less than in the AR40 at 3 months postsurgery (p<0.05). The greater PCO in the AR40 group was possibly due to differences in edge form and material between the IOLs. (author abst.)
