| Abstract;Crows are suspected of carrying away candles from the outdoor candleholder at Fushimi-Inari shrine, Kyoto, and may be causing field fires. The authors investigated the behavior of the crows through fieldworks including video recording. A jungle crow carried away a candle to an area within a 50-100m radius of the candleholder. After stealing the candle, the crow perched on a nearby tree gnawing on the candle held in one or both feet. Then, the crow carried the candle into the forest and hid it in debris on the forest floor. In another scene, a crow showed no fear of the candle flame while eating the melting wax. Although no clear evidence was obtained on how field fires could occur, but we can speculate about the possibility of the candle still alight when hidden by crows and so igniting the material used to cover it. |
