Abstract; The present study deals with the laboratory observation of the life cycle of Leptotrombidium pallidum, one of the vector mites of scrub typhus in Japan. The mite's life cycle consisted of 8 stages, namely egg, deutovum, unfed larva, engorged larva, protonymph, deutonymph, tritonymph, and adult. Remarkable morphological changes were seen between these stages. Particularly, there was an alternation of active and inactive (quiescent) stage from engorged larva to adult stage. When active deutonymph developed into quiescent tritonymph, deutonymphal legs were not used for the leg-sheaths of adult, but new leg-sheaths were formed on the ventral surface of tritonymph, in which adult legs developed. Protonymph and tritonymph had peculiar morphology with both larval and protonymphal characteristics, and both deutonymphal and tritonymphal characteristics, respectively. Ecological behavior of each developmental stage of the life cycle was described. (author abst.)
