| Abstract; This study was aimed to decrease for edema with pioglitazone treatment, and evaluate the availability and safety when administered pioglitazone 15mg every one day or two days to type 2 diabetic patients. 60 patients (27males, 33females) were administered every day (group 1), 20 patients (6males, l4females) were administered every two days (group 2). The changes of plasma glucose, HbA1c levels and side effects were examined after six months. In group 1, plasma glucose, and HbA1c levels were decreased significantly(p<0.05, p<0.01), but one-third of the patients withdrew with ingestion for edema. As for edema, female is about 4 times higher than male, and mostly occurred within six months. On the other hand, in group 2, only for females, not for males, plasma glucose and HbA1c levels were decreased significantly(p<0.05, p<0.001), and body weight was increased (+1.8 kg ) significantly (p<0.001) after six month. One female withdrew for edema caused by arthritis. Other side effects, such as hepatic damage or heart failure, was not observed in both groups. These results suggest that pioglitazone administration for Japanese type 2 diabetic females should be started on every second. (author abst.) |
