Abstract;A spiral water mill had been used as an important power source in agriculture at prewar days. It is significant to use a spiral water mill as a small hydroelectric generator by the purpose of the natural energy use now. However, the research on the hydraulic characteristics of a spiral water mill is none at all. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the rotary mechanism of the spiral water mill. In this research, to understand the characteristics of start rotation, the water flow was observed through the experiment. As a result, the following findings were obtained. 1) When the rotation is started, the rotation becomes discontinuous and becomes continuous according to flow rate. 2) Hydraulic pressure by the backwater is rotation power in the state of subcritical flow. 3) The impact pressure is rotation power in the state of supercritical flow.
