| Abstract;The maintenance fluid Veen 3G Inj., acetated electrolyte solution containing 5% glucose, was administered to postoperative pediatric patients who were judged to be completely or partially unable to take a maintenance fluid by the oral or enteral route and require intravenous replacement of water, electrolytes and energy. Veen 3G Inj. was administered by intravenous infusion for up to 24 hours from postoperative day 1 (POD 1). Blood chemistry examination and urinalysis were performed before and after administration to assess the following three variables: 1) the replacement and maintenance of water (assessment of hydration and urine output) ; 2) the maintenance of serum electrolytes (Na and K) ; and 3 the utilization of glucose (blood glucose and urinary glucose). Having these variables within normal range was regarded as the indicator of efficacy of a maintenance fluid. Veen 3G Inj. proved effective in maintaining these variables within normal in all (100%) of the 25 pediatric patients who were evaluable for efficacy. As for its safety, Veen 3G Inj. produced no adverse events or abnormal laboratory values attributable to its infusion in any of the 29 children who received it and was thus judged to have posed no safety problem. The results obtained in this study where Veen 3G Inj. was administered to postoperative pediatric patients suggest that Veen 3G Inj. is a clinically useful and highly safe maintenance fluid.
