Abstract; Objective Gastric emptying in ulcer-like functional dyspepsia (FD) patients appears to be associated with the gastric acid secretion, but the pathophysiology is unclear. We reported impaired gastric function in patients with dysmotility-like FD and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) using capsules containing contrast medium. Here, we report a comparison of gastric function in ulcer-like FD patients with that in healthy controls. Subjects The subjects were 24 ulcer-like FD patients and 21 healthy controls. The subjects were given 15 capsules (capsule No. 00, containing 9 g of ovalbumin powder and 26 mL of contrast medium) early in the morning. The movement of the capsules was observed under fluo-roscopy a total of 10 times at 0, 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 min after ingestion. The capsules in the proximal and distal stomach were counted separately. Five of 24 ulcer-like FD patients were administered omeprazole orally 20 mg/day for 14 days, and the gastric functions were compared using the same method. Results In ulcer-like FD patients, a delay in gastric emptying of the capsules was observed. The number of capsules remaining in the proximal stomach 5, 15 minutes after ingestion tended to be lower in the ulcer-like group. Gastric emptying improved in patients who were administered omeprazole. Conclusion Gastric emptying was delayed in ulcer-like FD patients. Proximal stomach retention in ulcer-like FD patients was reduced. The delayed gastric emptying in ulcer-like FD patients improved with omeprazole. (author abst.)
