Abstract; There are increasing cases where the mountain tunneling method is being adopted for construction of urban tunnels as the technology develops. However, in the urban area there remains much to be solved, for instance, soft soil foundation with resultant poor self-supportability of excavated faces and restraint to possible minimum of the environmental impact due to ground surface settlement or ground water level lowering. In Japan, there are very few technical guides for construction of ueban tunnels. Despite several tens of the construction practices on urban tunnels by use of the mountain tunneling method, there are not as yet established any definite design procedures and methods. To cope with this situation, we have summarized for analyses the urban tunnel design methods and construction completed by application of the mountain tunneling method, on the basis of which the design standard has been drafted for urban tunnel construction by mountain tunneling as explained in this report.
