Abstract;Chromosomal analyses were carried out on the Batrachoidiformes species, Porichthys porosissimus, from Rio de Janeiro Coast, Brazil. This is the first cytogenetic report for this order representatives. Karyotypes of individuals from both sexes showed a diploid number of 2n=44 chromosomes, with 14 biarmed chromosomes (NE=58). Two pairs of metacentrics much larger than the other chromosomes can be identified. C-banding analysis showed that most of the chromosomes presented only pericentromeric blocks, with exception to the two larger pairs of chromosomes, where the heterochromatin could occupy a great segment of both arms, beside the centromeric region. The number of nucleoli per nucleus at interphase ranged from one to three. (author abst.)
