| Abstract;Several authors reported that the Charleston Bending Brace (CBB) was effective for idiopathic scoliosis. The advantages of CBB are to produce a very good inbrace correction and to be tolerated easily because of its night time only wearing schedule. The preliminary results of treatment with CBB were investigated in this study. Patients and methods: Thirty three cases (32 females and 1 male) with idiopathic scoliosis were treated with CBB from 1991 to 1996 (5 years). Criteria for treatment selection were single curve or major thoracic and minor lumbar curve, which have an apex caudal to T7. Heights of the patients and all curves were measured. Results: Twelve patients completed treatment. Six patients keep on wearing now. Eight patients discontinued treatment. One patients got progression of curvature despite the brace so that she needed surgical treatment. The braces were used in remaining 6 patients who were waiting for surgery. As far as the patients who completed treatment, an average age of start of wearing CBB was 13.2 years (12-45), a mean length of wearing period was 2 years and 3 months. Scoliosis curvature averaged 37 (24-50) degrees at beginning of wearing and final curvature after weaning averaged 36 (19-47) degrees. Meanwhile heights of all patients were increased (maximum 8 cm). Conclusions: The CBB produces a very good inbrace correction and can be effective for juvenile idiopathic scoliosis. The CBB also can be effective for scoliosis with major thoracic and minor lumbar curve in spite of double curve. (author abst.) |
