Abstract; The dependence of thermal dehydration and crystallization behavior of nitrofurantoin monohydrate on humidity was studied by using humidity controlled XRD-DSC. Dehydration and crystallization behavior in dry and high humidity behavior was quite different. Dehydration in dry nitrogen gave a mixture of crystalline and amorphous anhydrate at 124-180.DEG.C. followed by crystallization around 185-190.DEG.C.. Whereas, dehydration in high humidity atmosphere such as 17.7%H2O(60.DEG.C.90%RH) gave well crystalline anhydrate at 140.DEG.C.. The thermogravimetric analysis of dehydration gave the activation energy of 112kJ/mol. (author abst.)
