Abstract; This paper describes microbial production of anticancer drug etoposide from insecticidal active substance deoxypodophyllotoxin (DPT). Strong insecticidal activity in component of Anthrtscus sylvestris, DPT was found. DPT is a deoxy form of epipodophyllotoxin, a basic skeleton of the anticancer drug etoposide. Penicillium F-0543 converts DPT into the epipodophyllotoxin at 100% yield. Since seeds of Hernandia ovigera of Okinawa contain 2.4% of DPT, hydroxylation reaction of DPT may have the possibility of connecting for mass production of etoposide.
