Abstract; The People's Republic of China has experienced significant development since the end of 1979 when reform and open-economy policies were first adopted. On the other hand, however, these policies spurred on totally new domestic problems, such as the polarization of the rich and poor between the eastern and western regions of the nation. This is a common phenomenon that often occurs during the first phase of any economic development. However, the factors unique to China as a country, exemplified by the various geographical conditions peculiar to its many regions, its huge population, and China's long history, etc. have undoubtedly accelerated this phenomenon. If this regional economic gap continues to expand, it just may prolong the duration of an undesirable period in which the developed region unfairly enjoys superior advantages while the underdeveloped region struggles to find ways to bring out its latent productivity. This will be a significant setback for China and could also negatively impact other countries in the region as well. Herein we discuss the potential for economic development in China and its local regions, with a focus on Xinjiang Uygur, which is located in northwest China. (author abst.)
