| Abstract; Most leguminous plants close their leaves at night and open them again the morning. This leaf-movement, controlled by a biological clock, is called nyctinasty. Why nyctinastic plants sleep? This has been a difficult problem which has bothered many great scientists. We discovered that the leaf kept opening for a week by the addition of potassium galactolespedezate, an artificial leaf-opening substance, has withered up to die. This result suggests that nyctinastic leaf-movement is indispensable for the survival of leguminous plants and significantly related to the moisture control. (author abst.) |
