| Abstract;Embryological features of Stachyurus were summarized by combining data obtained from the present study with those available from earlier studies to discuss relationships with Crossosomataceae, Staphyleaceae and Geissolomataceae which were recently suggested by molecular evidence. Comparisons showed that Stachyurus agree well with both Crossosomataceae and Staphyleaceae and particularly with Crossosomataceae in having a persistent anther epidermis, plural ovule archesporial cells, the thinner(4-5-cell-layered) testa, remarkably sclerotic testal cells, and an aril. Stachyurus is however clearly distinct from Crossosomataceae in having anatropous ovules, instead of campylotropous ones. Embryological evidence thus supports a distinctness of Stachyurus as a separate family Stachyuraceae as well as its sister group relationship to Crossosomataceae, and further supports their close relationship with Staphyleaceae and probably with Geissolomataceae. However, Geissolomataceae must be studied because of the lack of information on most of the embryological characters. (author abst.) |
