| Abstract; To investigate the role of zinc in blood circulation, we observed blood pressure(BP) and renal blood flow(RBF) in control rats and rats with zinc deficiency(ZD). ZD was induced by feeding a zinc-deficient diet for 4 weeks. As a result, ZD did not change BP, but significantly reduced RBF and increased renal vascular resistance(RVR). It suggested that zinc plays an important role in maintaining RBF and RVR. The effects of ZD on RBF and RVR were not affected by a nitric oxide(NO) synthase inhibitor but affected by a NO donor. Thus, NO, but not NO synthase, was responsible for the effects. Since ZD reduces Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activities, the effects of zinc on RBF and RVR may be related to superoxide scavaging NO.
