| Abstract; The tooth size of two populations from Philippines was measured and compared with other Pacific populations. Subjects were dental plaster casts of Philippine Negritos housed in the University Museum, the University of Tokyo, and those of modern Filipinos housed in Showa University School of Dentistry. Mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters were generally smaller in Negritos than in modern Filipinos. Sex differences of the diameters were noted in modern Filipinos compared with other populations. Mahalanobis' distances were computed on the basis of these parameters among 10 Pacific populations. Two dimensional expression of the distances showed that Negrito was plotted far from other Pacific populations, but the modern Filipino was plotted closely to Polynesian populations. The results of cluster analysis revealed that Negrito showed independent cluster against other Pacific populations. The genetical influence from Negritos to modern Filipinos has been considered in various field of physical anthropology. However, recent Filipino's tooth size is far from Negritos, but closer to Polynesian peoples. (author abst.) |
