Abstract; It is a basic factor for our healthy life to maintain a stable sleep-wake cycle. In the aged persons, both nocturnal sleep and daytime wakefulness are often deteriorated. The bright light treatment, which is based on the concept of restoring the normal circadian rhythm by bright light exposure, is detailed in this article as a method of sleep-wake improvement. First the physiological background is introduced, and the effective results of bright light treatment in two nursing homes are reported. The late morning bright light treatment showed the tendency to improve the sleep-wake disturbances and to reduce the abnormal behavior episodes around the sleep-onset time. Lastly the lighting system supporting the bright light treatment is proposed. When the treatment is applied, the appropriate design of both lighting devices and light exposing methods is important.
