Activation of the Network of European Researchers in Japan
As international research collaboration and international experience becomes ever more important for the development of a research career, the European Commission has sought to provide European researchers based overseas with a range of tools and information to assist them in the development of their careers.
The Network of European Researchers in Japan initiative was launched following the publication of survey results with European researchers based in Japan where it was found that 74% of respondents were in favour of the development of such a network. Subsequently, in the summer an official launch by the European Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potočnik, took place.
Drawing heavily on the survey findings, as well as through consultation with European Member-State representatives in Japan and Japanese funding bodies, the new homepage forms the centerpiece of the network. The following topics are covered:
・Funding and Careers Information – including grants for fellowships, international travel, or collaborative research covered by Marie Curie Actions, the European Research Council, European Member-States, as well as Japanese funding bodies.
・Events and Networking Opportunity information – including scientific events in Japan and those that support the network.
・Research developments in Europe and Japan – including research policy news and developments.
・Explanation of the frameworks for research between Europe and Japan, including information on participation within the Seventh Framework Programme.
The network also includes networking pages that enable researchers to share information and interact with one another. A monthly newsletter provides a more in-depth look at research developments and issues, as well as further background information on funding opportunities, such as acceptance ratios or other statistical assessments.
The homepage, forum, newsletters and events will form a unique and essential source of information for European researchers based in Japan.
