Dual Mode Vehicle

A DMV is a single vehicle that can run on both railroad tracks and general roads, developed by Hokkaido Railway Company. Experimental test runs were started on the Senmou Line in Hokkaido in April 2007. The vehicles are about the size of a small bus and have steel wheels housed on the inner side of the tires that can be lowered when the vehicles run on rails. DMVs in Europe use two different kinds of power: electricity on railway tracks and internal combustion engines on roads. In contrast, Hokkaido Railway Company’s DMV is powered by a diesel engine in both cases.
