Blue rose

Using genetic recombination technology, Suntory succeeded in developing the world's first blue rose in 2004. Roses do not have the natural ability to make blue pigment, and plant breeders’ efforts have fallen short of achieving this color. Suntory succeeded in making blue roses through research that satisfies all domestic laws and is based on the Cartagena Protocol that controls genetic engineering of animals and plants. With the cooperation of its Australian subsidiary, Suntory is now developing production and sales systems and will begin selling these roses for gifts in 2009.
