This is a low-fuel-consumption, low-polluting train developed by the East Japan Railway Company. It runs on a combination of large batteries installed on the roof and a diesel engine. It began commercial operation on the Komi Line connecting Nagano and Yamanashi Prefectures, the first commercial operation for such a train anywhere in the world. Fuel consumption is improved by about 10% from that of conventional diesel trains, and nitrous oxides and particulates are reduced by about 60%. Noise is also greatly reduced. |
