This is food developed for Japanese astronauts on long-terms stays in space. In the state of weightlessness in space, bones weaken and the body is exposed to radiation. Thus, space food must include nutrients to maintain physical strength and be able to withstand long preservation. Twelve domestic food companies and others have been commissioned by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to develop such food. Examples include “space curry” and “space ramen (noodles)” with added calcium and vitamin D to build bones, and turmeric, which has an antibacterial effect. |
